DIY Hammam: Bring The Turkish Bath Home With You

DIY Hammam: Bring The Turkish Bath Home With You

Have you ever heard of a Hammam, otherwise known as a Turkish bath? It's a simple but ultra-luxurious way to refresh and reset — and one of the most indulgent rituals you can give yourself.

The Turkish bath can transport you to a different time and place, to the beautiful ancient cities of Istanbul or Marrakech, where many of the most renowned secrets of natural beauty have their roots. There is ancestral wisdom baked into this ritual — the kind that no modern spa can fully replicate.

Most modern cities offer Hammam experiences you can book. But you probably won't get to experience that old-world charm without hopping on a plane.

Even close to home, getting to the spa can be a hassle: the commute, the cost, the time commitment. And depending on where you live, you might not have access to a spa that uses natural products that support your clean lifestyle. You deserve better than compromise.

Might we suggest: bring the hammam home to you. This old-school ritual will leave you feeling renewed and invigorated — on your terms, in your space, with products you trust.

The History of Turkish Baths

Cecile's products and philosophy are steeped in tradition — one of the reasons we love the hammam experience so deeply. Dating all the way back to the Ottoman Empire, the Turkish bath was primarily used for actual bathing, since indoor plumbing hadn't entered the scene quite yet. But the baths also served a vital social function: gathering spaces to celebrate through ritual, community, and ceremony.

While the Turkish bath or hammam is one of the most well-known spa experiences, it's also one of the more surprising ones. The goal isn't just cleanliness — it's to soften the skin and prepare it for some seriously effective exfoliation. In fact, many devotees of Turkish baths speak of the experience as though they've shed layers and layers of skin. As you'll see in a moment, that's exactly what happens.

Traditional Turkish baths use specific tools to aid in cleansing and detoxification: namely the peshtemal (the "Turkish towel") and the kese, an exfoliating mitt.

A Spa Experience That Helps You Live Cleaner

Living cleaner and more boldly is easier when you DIY your hammam experience. It takes ample steam, a good shower, and a few intentional products — minimal, eco-friendly, and effective. The kind of ritual Aunt Cecile would approve of.

Benefits of the spa experience at home:

  • Low cost
  • Deep relaxation
  • Reduced anxiety and stress
  • Detoxing qualities
  • A beautiful activity for couples

Detox Your Body & Soul With a Turkish Bath

The modern Turkish bath is essentially a detoxifying steam experience — equal parts invigorating and soothing — that involves deep relaxation and thorough exfoliation. It's a celebrated ritual that friends, partners, and even families enjoy together, often used to mark birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones worth honoring.

When recreating a hammam at home, the exfoliation is really the star of the show. You can use our Coconut Milk Polish and Soak as your exfoliant of choice — its fine grain salts and Himalayan salt provide a deeply detoxifying, skin-renewing experience that's perfectly in the spirit of the hammam. For the most authentic experience, a kese mitt takes things even further. These ultra-exfoliating gloves leave your skin more thoroughly exfoliated than you've ever experienced, priming it for deep moisturizing. Some people have likened the kese mitt to sandpaper — we prefer to think of it as a vigorously renewing experience. Your skin will never be smoother.

One more tip for an even more luxurious at-home hammam: heat your towels by laying them on a radiator, using a towel warmer, or even tossing a damp towel in the microwave for 30 seconds.

HAMMAM AT HOME: DIY TURKISH BATH

Step 1. Set the mood with candles, music, essential oils in a diffuser — or reach for our Rejuvenate Calmative Mist to instantly shift the atmosphere.

Step 2. Turn your bathroom into a wet sauna by running your shower on the hottest setting for a few minutes. The steam will begin softening your skin and readying it for exfoliation.

Step 3. While the bathroom steams up, wrap yourself in a warm peshtemal and sit in the bathroom — not in the shower — for 10 to 15 minutes. Let the steam work. Your skin is softening. Your mind is settling.

Step 4. Turn the shower from hot to warm and step in. Wet your body, then turn off the water. Apply our Clean Slate Detoxifying Charcoal Soap all over and massage it in gently. The activated charcoal draws out impurities while the olive oil and shea butter base keeps your skin nourished rather than stripped — the intelligent balance you deserve.

Step 5. Scrub with your kese mitt, washcloth, or exfoliating tool. Use vigorous circular motions — this is the one and only time we'll tell you not to be gentle. Traditional hammam exfoliation isn't delicate, and it might feel a little intense. That's by design.

Step 6. Turn the water back on warm and rinse. You will be amazed at what comes away.

Step 7. For a final refreshing burst, switch to cold water for a quick rinse.

Step 8. Wrap yourself in your warm peshtemal. Seal in everything with our Silk Serenity All-In-One Serum — its waterless blend of Rosehip Seed Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, and Avocado Oil delivers deep, lasting nourishment for face, body, and hair without any greasy residue. Then sit back with a warm cup of tea. You've earned it.

Hammam-Style At-Home Facial

This hammam-style facial is perfect if you're short on time, short on space, or simply want to focus on your face. All of the ritual. All of the nourishment. Beautifully simple.

Step 1. Bring a pot of water to boil on the stove. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil — we recommend eucalyptus.

Step 2. While the water heats, place a damp towel in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Step 3. Once the water is boiling, reduce to a simmer. Drape the warm towel over your head and hover your face over the steam.

Step 4. Breathe deeply and indulge for about 10 minutes. Don't overheat — this is meant to restore you, not exhaust you.

Step 5. After steaming, splash your face with warm water. Mix our Brightening Facial Grains with a little water to form a paste and apply it to your face and neck. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Pour yourself a cup of tea while the Adzuki beans, Multani Mitti clay, and Rhassoul clay work their ancestral magic on your skin.

Step 6. Work the mask in gentle circular motions for maximum exfoliation, then remove with a damp washcloth.

Step 7. Rinse with warm water, then cool. Give yourself a mini facial massage by tapping lightly all over your face with your fingertips.

Step. 8. Finish with our Silk Serenity All-In-One Serum — concentrated, nutrient-dense, and formulated to nourish face, hair, and body in one elegant step. A little goes a long way.

Bringing the hammam home is easier, more affordable, and often more comfortable than any trip to a spa. This is what living cleaner looks like: ancient ritual, intentional products, and the quiet luxury you deserve every day.
