  • Sit with your eyes gently closed and turn your attention to the rhythm of your breath.

  • Breathe naturally, ideally through the nostrils, and don’t make any attempts to control the breath. At the moment all you are doing is noticing your body inhale and exhale.

  • Notice the sensation of the air moving in and out of your nostrils and concentrate on this, excluding everything else from your thoughts.

  • Your mind will be very busy at first, in fact you may feel as if it has become busier, but in reality you are just becoming more aware of how busy your mind actually is.

  • Avoid the temptation to follow any train of thought as it arises, instead let it pass like a cloud and remain focused on the sensation of the breath. Just keep repeating this as thoughts arise and as many times as necessary until the mind settles.

  • Continue with the rhythm of the breath for 15-20 minutes. You can set a timer (I would just make sure the ring tone is one that is gentle rather than alarming).
